I would like to know as well. As far as I have learned, Richard Tidwell I was the only Tidwell to come here from England. He came in the 1600s to Virginia. All early Tidwells in the U.S. are supposably descended from him. Things would get VERY interesting if we start finding other Tidwells who immigrated here in the late 1600-late 1800s. We do know about Indian John and his descendents. We do know there are probably cover ups of Indian wives here and there. We know there are African American Tidwells. But, I haven't heard of other immigrants. PLEASE share your information! Exciting!

A lot of information is contained in a book written by: Don L. Shadburn, called "Unhallowed Intrusion." This book contains information about the history of Cherokee families that lived in Forsyth County, GA. It mentions Young Deer (my fourth-great-grandfather) who married Winnafred Tidwell, daughter of John Tidwell and Celia. It states that John Tidwell was born between 1760-1770 and Celia born 1779. They settled on the west side of the Chattahoochee near Young Deer Creek and had six daughters who all bore children by Cherokees. Three married full-bloods and three married mixed-bloods. Some rather nasty comments about John and Celia were made by Hugh Montgomery (Cherokee agent assigned by President Monroe) concerning the 'abominable' practice of certain white men who gave their daughters in marriage to the Indians and this distasteful and immoral practice of intermarrying between the races had produced a 'motly race that was propagating very fast on the Chattahoochee and it's waters.' The book contains a section on both Young Deer and Indian John Tidwell.
I have heard the rumors that John and Celia came from Wales and were hired by the Cherokee Nation to build them a mill (think it was a water-mill). Can't verify this though. -Linda Ann Ingram

I have seen that Wales information in one of the Tidwell Family History books, but I have NEVER been able to connect the information to my Tidwell family, who were the ones who had five daughters to marry into the Cherokee Tribe.
Since their parents were white and their children were all females, the only one with Cherokee blood to carry on the Tidwell name in the tribe was John Youngdeer Tidwell. His mother was Winnie Tidwell, a daughter of John and Celia. She married a full-blood Cherokee; Youngdeer, who died when their son was young. As was a tradition in the tribe, he used the name of "John Youngdeer Tidwell", but later was simply know as John ("Indian John") Tidwell. He came from GA to the western Nation quite late, and is buried in the Stilwell Cemetery- Stilwell OK.
John Youngdeer Tidwell was my fourth great grandfather.

young deer was a gold miner and hunter who died about 1832 in georgia. his cherokee name was inweeneitah.he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun and died. he lived near sims gold mine onthe hightower river.his wife' name was aminda tidwell and the children took her name after his death.she was a white woman. their son john was born on the chatahoochee river in georgia. he was about 8-12 years old when his father died. the tidwell's did not come west with the general migration. it may have been as late as 1883 before they arrived. some of them stayed in georgia.

The Pat Freeman that you responded to and I are cousins, and we are both direct descendants of Youngdeer. He and his wife were our 5th great-grandparents.

According to the Cherokee Tribal Records, Youngdeer's wife was WINNIFORD (called "Winnie") Tidwell and she was the daughter of John and Celia (Gravette) Tidwell.

I have never heard or read of any person in the Tidwell family by the name of "aminda tidwell".

Sorry I'm late in getting back to you, but I was on a research trip.
The notes that I have on Celia (wife of John) are as follows:
"ref: History of Adair County, OK; pg 683. G/M application #16 by John Youngdeer Tidwell. G/M applications made by Mancel/Mansel, Andrew, and many others.
"Gone To Georgia"- page #91; some Gravettes were living in Jackson and Hall Co GA- "many persons by that name were found in old records of Stafford, King George Co VA"."
In addition, my grandfather had listed her name in his bible as "Celia Gravette".

No- I'm not mistaking this Celia for her daughter.

Find the book "Whites Among the Cherokees". It is a collection of original source materials about Georgia and the Indians. The book covers the years 1828 to 1838 and includes primary data from Federal, State, and individual sources. The material in the book was collected and edited by Mary B. Warren and Eve B. Weeks. Copyright is 1987 and publisher is Heritage Papers, Danielsville, Georgia 30633.
Several TIDWELL's are mentioned in this book.
John TIDWELL born before 1790 and his wife Celia legally resided on Indian land in north Georgia. John TIDWELL worked in the Cherokee Nation as a millwright. He had five daughters and several marriaged mixed and full blooded Cherokee men.
Daughters and husbands follow:
(1) Sarah married John SANDERS, Jr.
(2) Winnie married YOUNG DEER (full blood)
(3) Celia married Aaron PARRIS (mixed blood)
(4) Patsy married Dick EISKY
(5) Unknown daughter married Henry SMITH
Notes:
After murder of YOUNG DEER, Winnie TIDWELL married John GODDARD. Celia TIDWELL's first husband, Aaron PARRIS emigrated to the Indian Territory, Oklahoma in 1832. Celia remarried to Luke GRAVITT (white).
From Cherokee County history and Paulding County Georgia census records:
Winnaford TIDWELL and YOUNG DEER had one son named John TIDWELL, often referred to as "Indian" John TIDWELL. He was born in the Cherokee Nation in 1815. YOUNG DEER's son became a blacksmith and lived in Paulding County.
In 1831 he married first, Elizabeth Betsy GRAVITT in Hall County Georgia. They had three children:
(1) Calite Winnie TIDWELL - FEMALE - 1832
(2) Mansel TIDWELL - MALE - 1836 (3) Genetta TIDWELL - FEMALE - 1838
First wife died in 1838. "Indian" John married second wife, Lucretia THOMPSON in 1842. Their children were:
(1) Pleasant TIDWELL born 1843 - MALE
(2) Loduskey Ann TIDWELL born 1845 - FEMALE
(3) Mary TIDWELL born 1847 - FEMALE
(4) Grace Aminda TIDWELL born 1849 - FEMALE
(5) Versonoy TIDWELL born 1850 - ?
(6) John Granville TIDWELL born 1852 - MALE
(7) Marny Clemintine TIDWELL born 1854 - FEMALE
(8) Safony Caroline TIDWELL born 1856 - FEMALE
(9) William TIDWELL born 1858 - MALE
(10) Washington Pennington TIDWELL born 1861 - MALE
(11) Martha TIDWELL born 1863 - FEMALE
(12) Minor TIDWELL born 1865 - MALE
(13) Leroy TIDWELL born 1868 - MALE
(14) Ada TIDWELL born 1872 - FEMALE
"Indian" John TIDWELL and many of his family emigrated to Oklahoma and are listed in the Dawes Rolls for Cherokee Allotment of land in 1889, 1894, and 1896. He was known in Stillwell, Oklahoma in the Indian "dialect" as, "Indian John with all them kids".
"Indian" John TIDWELL returned to Georgia from the Indian Territory and settled for a few years in Cobb County Georgia. Then moved to Paulding County Georgia. From there he returned to the Indian Territory in the 1880's. "Indian" John TIDWELL died in 1903 before he fully documented his Cherokee heritage and before he got a Cherokee land allotment.
I hope this helps some TIDWELL's seeking a Cherokee connection. In my TIDWELL line I have found no native American link. Would be proud to discover one. -phil tidwell

Starr indicates that Charles Tickaneesky had two wives, the second being Susan Easky, and that Richard Tickaneesky, Charles's brother, was also married to Susan Easky, this is an error. Richard Tickaneesky was married to Ailsey _____, and all his children were by her. To date, the only son that I have been able to prove to Charles Tickaneesky, and the earliest, is his son Richard. In Miller Application 228, misc. test P3131 George
Ketcher, the son of Richard Tickaneesky/Ketcher states, "my father's mother's name was Susie Walkingstick...she had a brother named Andy Estey...". Susy Estey married first, Charles Tickaneesky, and second Ben Walkingstick. George Ketcher, Miller Application 228, was the grandson of Charles Catcher. On his application, it was indicated by either the individual taking the application or someone adding to it at a later date, that his "paternal grandfather (was) probably...Tah 137...".

Tah 137 reads:
"Catcher Char lar te he
Susan Catcher
Stephen Catcher
Eliza Catcher"
Whether these individuals enrolled with him were another wife and two
children or three children isn't known.

Rebecca Morgan and Asa Adam Hedrick were "married in a civil ceremony and a traditional Indian ceremony, as was the law to prevent white men from marrying Cherokee women to obtain their land. Before permission to marry could be given, the white groom had to furnish several character witnesses.

"Grandma's allotted land was in Craig County, Oklahoma, just a few miles southeast of Coffeeville, Kansas. Here they built their home, raised their family and resided until about 1940 when ill health overtook Grandpa and they went to live in San Bernardino, California with a daughter and son-in-law, Lena and John Devinney. Both are interred in the Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino."
